Leafy Spurge

Leafy Spurge or green spurge (Euphorbia esula) is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 1-1.2 m tall, with several stems branched from the base. It's flowers are small, produced in umbels with a basal pair of bright yellow-green petal-like bracts. Clusters of the bracts appear in late spring, while the actual flowers do not develop until early summer. It is native to central and southern Europe, and eastward through most of Asia. It's considered an invasive plant in the U.S., where it was introduced possibly as a seed impurity in the early 19th century, because displaces native vegetation in prairie habitats and fields through shading and by usurping available water and nutrients.

In today's new puzzle we're featuring a chestnut that has just fallen on the Autumn leave covered ground. Chestnuts are contained in a spiny cupule 5–11 cm in diameter, also called "bur" or "burr".The burrs are often paired or clustered on the branch and contain one to seven nuts. Around the time the fruits reach maturity, the burrs turn yellow-brown and split open in two or four sections. They can remain on the tree longer than they hold the fruit, but more often achieve complete opening and release the fruits only after having fallen on the ground.

The Pinnated Grouse or Greater Prairie Chicken is a large bird in the grouse family. It was once abundant in North America, but has become extremely rare or extinct. These birds were once widespread all across the oak savanna and tall grass prairie ecosystem. They prefer undisturbed prairie but can tolerate agricultural land mixed with prairie. They eat seeds and fruit, but during the summer they also eat insects and green plants. The puzzle is based on an illustration by John James Audubon from his color-plate book entitled The Birds of America.
