The first permanent tram line in continental Europe was opened in Paris in 1855 by Alphonse Loubat. The first tram in South America opened in 1858 in Santiago, Chile. Africa's first tram started operating in Alexandria on 8 January 1863. The first trams in Australia opened in 1860 in Sydney.
