Complete today's puzzle and put the colorful rag rugs back together. If you didn't know, rag rugs are generally used as a floor covering, or as a decorative feature. Rag rugs were commonly made in households up to the middle of the 20th century by using odd scraps of fabric on a background of old sacking.

In today's puzzle we feature a close-up of a tree's bark. If you didn't know, bark is the outermost layers of stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. Bark often gets rougher as the tree ages. One of the functions of bark is to protect the plant against damage from environmental factors.

Time to split some wood for the fireplace. If you didn't know, the act of splitting firewood from logs that have been pre-cut into sections is called log splitting. It is done using an axe or maul, or by using a mechanical log splitter. Logs need to be split so they fit into wood stoves or fireplaces and help accelerate the drying process. Freshly cut wood contains a lot of moisture and doesn't burn very well.

Brightly Colored Feathers

If you didn't know, feathers aid birds with flight, thermal insulation, and waterproofing. Their colors and patterns help in communication and protection. The colors of feathers are produced by pigments, by microscopic structures that can refract, reflect, or scatter selected wavelengths of light, or by a combination of both. There are two basic types of feather: vaned feathers which cover the exterior of the body, and down feathers which are underneath the vaned feathers. A bird's feathers undergo wear and tear and are replaced periodically during the bird's life through molting.
