American Football

American Football

American football, referred to as football in the United States and Canada, and also known as "gridiron football" or simply "gridiron", is a sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with control of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with or passing the ball, while the team without control of the ball, the defense, aims to stop their advance and take control of the ball for themselves. American football as a whole is the most popular sport in the United States. Professional football and college football are the most popular forms of the game.
Darts

Darts

Darts is a traditional pub game, commonly played in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Republic of Ireland, the Scandinavian countries, the United States, and elsewhere. The dartboard may have its origins in the cross-section of a tree. An old name for a dartboard is "butt"; the word comes from the French word but, meaning "target". Initially the missiles were simply cut down arrows or crossbow bolts. The first purpose made darts were manufactured in one piece from wood; wrapped with a strip of lead for weight and fitted with flights made from split turkey feathers. The standard dartboard is divided into 20 numbered sections, scoring from 1 to 20 points, by wires running from the small central circle to the outer circular wire. Circular wires within the outer wire subdivide each section into single, double and triple areas. There are many games that can be played on a dartboard, but darts generally refers to a game whereby the player throws three darts per visit to the board with the goal of reducing a fixed score, commonly 501 or 301, to zero, with the final dart landing in either the bullseye or a double segment.

Rope

Rope

Rope and more rope in today's puzzle of the day. The use of ropes for pulling, fastening, lifting, attaching, climbing, and carrying dates back to prehistoric times. The laid rope, also called twisted rope, that you see in the image is historically the prevalent form of rope. Common twisted rope generally consists of three strands and is normally right-laid, or given a final right-handed twist. Most twisted ropes are built up in three steps. First, fibres are gathered and spun into yarns. These yarns are then formed into strands by twisting. The strands are then twisted together into actual rope. The twist of the yarn is opposite to that of the strand, and that in turn is opposite to that of the rope. This counter-twist, introduced with each successive operation, holds the rope together and gives it more strength.

Old Clock

Old Clock

It's time for a new puzzle. Today's jigsaw features an old clock that used to tick time away in a town's clock tower. A clock tower is a tower specifically built with one or more clock faces. Clock towers can be either freestanding or part of a church or municipal building such as a town hall. The mechanism inside the tower is known as a turret clock. It often marks the hour by sounding large bells or chimes, sometimes playing simple musical tunes. Before the middle of the twentieth century, most people did not have watches, and prior to the 18th century even home clocks were rare. The first clocks didn't have faces, but were solely striking clocks, which sounded bells to call the surrounding community to work or to prayer.

The figurine depicts a cat (traditionally a calico Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—often at the entrance—of shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses.
