Pine Cones And Autumn Leaves

The members of the pine family (pines, firs, spruces, larches, cedars, etc.) have cones that are imbricate (that is, with scales overlapping each other like fish scales). These kind of pine cones are a symbol of autumn, because most of them fall to the ground during this season. A pine cone will go through many cycles of opening and closing during its life span, even after seed dispersal is complete. The opening of pine cones is associated with their moisture content. Cones are open when dry and closed when wet.

Ferns

In today's puzzle we feature lots and lots of ferns. If you didn't know, ferns are can be found in almost every part of the world. They are members of a group of plants that reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. There are four particular types of habitats that ferns are found in: crevices in rock faces, especially when sheltered from the full sun; wetlands; moist, shady forests; and tropical trees.

Old Wicker Basket

In today's new puzzle we feature an old wicker basket. If you didn't know, wicker is a technique for making products woven from any one of a variety of pliable plant materials. Wicker is traditionally made of material of plant origin, such as willow, rattan, reed, and bamboo. The word wicker is believed to be of Scandinavian origin: "vika", which means to bend in Swedish, and "vikker" meaning willow.

Rough Tree Bark

In today's puzzle we feature a close-up of a tree's bark. If you didn't know, bark is the outermost layers of stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. Bark often gets rougher as the tree ages. One of the functions of bark is to protect the plant against damage from environmental factors.

Two Hot Air Balloons

Start today's puzzle and join us for a relaxing hot air balloon ride. Modern balloons have been made in many shapes (rocket ships and the shapes of various commercial products, though the traditional shape is used for most non-commercial) and sizes. The smallest, one-person, basket-less balloons (called "Hoppers" or "Cloudhoppers") have a radius around 5 m(16 ft). At the other end of the scale, balloons used by commercial sightseeing operations are able to carry well over two dozen people and are several times bigger the the one-person ones. In today's puzzle we feature two smaller balloons that can only care two people at a time.

It is typically practiced at ski resorts. Skis were first invented to cross wetlands and marshes in the winter when they froze over. Skiing was an integral part of transportation in colder countries for thousands of years. The birth of modern alpine skiing is often dated to the 1850s, and during the late 19th century, skiing was adapted from a method of transportation to a competitive and recreational sport.
