Also known as English yew, or European yew, Taxus baccata is a conifer native to western, central and southern Europe, northwest Africa, northern Iran and southwest Asia. The earliest lamps required that a lamplighter tour the town at dusk, lighting each of the lamps. The first widespread system of street lighting used piped coal gas as fuel. The first electric street lighting employed arc lamps, initially the 'Electric candle', 'Jablotchkoff candle' or 'Yablochkov candle' developed by a Russian, Pavel Yablochkov, in 1875.
