Villa del Balbianello Puzzle Details:

About: The Villa del Balbianello is a villa in the comune of Lenno, Italy, overlooking Lake Como. It was built in 1787 on the site of a Franciscan monastery for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. By the early twentieth century, the buildings had fallen into a state of neglect when American businessman Butler Ames purchased and renovated the villa and its garden. In 1974, Ames's heirs sold the villa to explorer Guido Monzino (leader of the first Italian expedition to climb Mount Everest), who filled it with rich collections, including artifacts acquired on his expeditions. Monzino, who died in 1988, left the villa to the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, the National Trust of Italy. Its grounds now form part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani.

Jurassic Coast View

Jurassic Coast View

The Jurassic Coast stretches from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset on the English Channel coast of southern England. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2001, the Jurassic Coast was the first wholly natural World Heritage Site to be designated in the United Kingdom. The cliffs on this part of the coast are constantly being eroded by the elements. The site spans 185 million years of geological history, coastal erosion having exposed an almost continuous sequence of rock formation covering the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The entire length of the coast can be walked on the South West Coast Path.

If you didn't know, if the structural frame of load-bearing timber is left exposed on the exterior of the building it may be referred to as half-timbered. The term half-timbering is not as old as the German name Fachwerk or the French name colombage, but it is the standard English name for this style. The most ancient known half-timbered building is called the House of opus craticum. It was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD in Herculaneum, Italy.

Lighthouse Island

Lighthouse Island

In today's new jigsaw puzzle we feature a great view of a small island hosting a light tower. Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbors, and can also assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational systems. Before modern strobe lights, lenses were used to concentrate the light from a continuous source. Vertical light rays of the lamp are redirected into a horizontal plane, and horizontally the light is focused into one or a few directions at a time, with the light beam swept around.
