A Misty Day In the Redwood Forest

It's misty summer morning and we're in the middle of a redwood forest in the Redwood National and State Parks along the coast of northern California. If you didn't know, sequoioideae, popularly known as redwoods, is a subfamily of coniferous trees. These trees are the tallest, among the oldest, and one of the most massive tree species on Earth.

View of the Rocky Mountains

Also known as the Rockies, the Rocky Mountains are a major mountain range in western North America. They stretch from the northernmost part of British Columbia, in western Canada, to New Mexico in the Southwestern United States. The range's highest peak is Mount Elbert located in Colorado at 4,401 meters (14,440 ft) above sea level. The picture featured in this puzzle was taken in Colorado - the state in the western United States encompassing most of the southern Rocky Mountains.

The Twelve Apostles

Today we're in Victoria, Australia visiting the Twelve Apostles - a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park. The harsh and extreme weather conditions from the Southern Ocean gradually erode the soft limestone to form caves in the cliffs, which then become arches that eventually collapse, leaving rock stacks up to 50 m high. The stacks were originally known as the Pinnacles, and the Sow and Pigs (or Sow and Piglets, with Muttonbird Island being the Sow and the smaller rock stacks being the Piglets), as well as the Twelve Apostles.

The Rock of Hautepierr

The beautiful landscape in today's puzzle was painted by Gustave Courbet, a French painter who led the Realism movement in 19th-century French painting, in 1869. The painting depicts and impressive rocky cliff and the surrounding countryside - small farm house, a dirt road and few trees. Bald Cypress Autumn Leaves

Also known as swamp cypress, white cypress, tidewater red cypress, gulf cypress and red cypress, the bald cypress is a deciduous conifer. Although many conifers are evergreen, bald cypress trees shed their needlelike leaves in the fall. Their bark is grayish brown to reddish brown, thin, and fibrous with a stringy texture and have needle-like green leaves. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow or copper red. Each winter the trees drop their leaves and regrow a new set in the spring.

What better way to spend a warm Autumn day than fishing in a breathtaking landscape? The park includes the major peaks of the 40-mile-long (64 km) Teton Range(a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains) as well as most of the northern sections of the valley known as Jackson Hole. It is an almost pristine ecosystem and the same species of flora and fauna that have existed since prehistoric times can still be found there. Grand Teton National Park is a popular destination for hiking, fishing, mountaineering, and other forms of recreation.
