Watermill On A Small Mountain River

Such watermills, like the one featured in this puzzle where used in the production of many material goods, including flour, lumber, paper, textiles, and many metal products. The water wheel may have originated from the ancient Near East in the 3rd century BC for use in moving millstones and small-scale grain grinding. Typically, water is diverted from a river or mill pond to a water wheel, along a channel. The force of the water's movement drives the blades of a wheel, which in turn rotates an axle that drives the mill's other machinery. In this puzzle we feature such a mill on a small mountain river, in a breath taking landscape.

The Old Venetian Harbour of Chania

Today we're going to Chania in Greece, the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania regional unit. Chania is the site of the Minoan settlement the Greeks called Kydonia. The first major wave of settlers from mainland Greece was by the Dorian Greeks who came around 1100 BC. After the Fourth Crusade (1204) and the fall of Byzantium in the Hellenic area, Crete was given to Bonifacio, Marquess of Montferrat. He in turn chose to sell it to the Venetians for 100 silver marks. Chania was chosen as the seat of the Rector of the region and flourished as a significant commercial centre of a fertile agricultural region. The city's name became La Canea and its fortifications were strengthened, giving Chania the form that it still has today. he walls of the city did not prevent the Ottoman army from overrunning the city in 1645. The Muslims turned most churches into mosques. They also built new mosques such as the Küçük Hasan Pasha Mosque (featured in this fun puzzle) on the harbour. Have fun!

Zion Canyon Play

Zion Canyon

This impressive canyon, located within the western half of Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, United States, is carved by the North Fork of the Virgin River. It is part of the Navajo sandstone Colorado Plateau. The beginning of the canyon (also known as Little Zion, Mukuntuweap, Mu-Loon'-Tu-Weap, and Straight Cañon ) is usually delineated as the Temple of Sinawava, a vertical-walled natural amphitheater nearly 910 m deep. The canyon actually begins much further upstream, however, and runs southward about 26 km through the Narrows to reach the Temple. he canyon was named by settler Isaac Behunin, who named the canyon after a "place of peace" mentioned in 2 Samuel 5:7 of the Bible. John Wesley Powell (U.S. soldier, geologist, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University) is credited with the name Mukuntuweap, supposedly the native name of the canyon. The canyon was first declared a national monument in 1909 and a a national park in 1919.
