The oldest document referring to Groningen's existence dates from 1040. The Winschoterdiep canal has total length is 35.5 kilometers, and it is approximately 100 meters in width. Sixteen bridges and locks are built across this canal, as well as many other passages. It is one of the oldest canals ever built in Groningen still in use.
