Organic vegetables are produced by methods that comply with the standards of organic farming - without using pesticides and fertilizers. The organic farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialization of agriculture. Early consumers interested in organic food would look for non-chemically treated, non-use of unapproved pesticides, fresh or minimally processed food. They mostly had to buy directly from growers. Organic food production is a self-regulated industry with government oversight in some countries. Currently, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Japan, and many other countries require producers to obtain special certification based on government-defined standards in order to market food as organic.
