The vase of flowers in a marble niche featured in today's puzzle was painter in oil on canvas by Michel Bruno Bellenge (French, Rouen 1726–1793 Rouen). The painting was intended to be used in decorative paneling over a door. It is meant to be looked at from below. That vantage point and the way it was painted (the perspective, lights and shadows) trick the observer into thinking the vase, the flowers and the marble niche are real.

The saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana, it's flowers are featured in this puzzle) typically grows to a height of 20-30 feet (6-9 meters) and a width of 15-25 feet (4.5-7.5 meters), with a rounded or spreading shape. Its leaves are dark green and oval-shaped, and can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) long. One of the most striking features of the saucer magnolia is its large, cup-shaped flowers, which can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in diameter. The flowers are usually pink or purplish-pink, with a white interior and a subtle fragrance. They bloom in early spring, before the leaves appear, and last for several weeks. It is a cross between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora, and was first bred in France in the early 19th century.
