It's a North American species of flowering plants in the sunflower family, native to the Eastern and Central North America. Rudbeckia hirta (the scientific name of the Black-Eyed-Susan) is widely cultivated in parks and gardens. The black-eyed Susan was designated the state flower of Maryland in 1918.
