The Family Concert

Today's puzzle is based on a painting by Jan Havickszoon Steen (c. 1626 - 679), a Dutch Golden Age painter. Daily life was Jan Steen's main pictorial theme. The painting featured depicts a small party listening to music in a family home. In his painting Steen often used members of his family as models.

Pergola with Oranges

The beautiful pergola surrounded by orange trees featured in today's puzzle was painted by Thomas Fearnley in oil on paper mounted on canvas in c. 1834. If you didn't know, a pergola is an outdoor garden feature forming a shaded walkway or sitting area of vertical posts or pillars. As a type of gazebo, it may also be an extension of a building or serve as protection for an open terrace or a link between pavilions.

The Basket of Apples

This new puzzle is based on Paul Cezanne 1893 painting "The Basket of Apples". This painting contains one of Cezanne's signature tilted tables, an impossible rectangle with no right angles. On the table you can see a basket of apples, a bottle of wine, a folded tablecloth and a plate of cookies. The painting is particularly remarkable for its creative composition, which rejected realistic representation in favor of distorting objects to create multiple perspectives.

Today we're going back in time and visiting Olinda, Brazil in 1662. This puzzle is based on an oil on canvas painting Frans Jansz Post. It depicts Olinda Cathedral (damaged when the Dutch captured the region from the Portuguese in the 1630s) in the background and a variety of indigenous animals, plants, birds and even insects in the foreground. Are you ready for the race? In this new puzzle we feature a painting by the Impressionist French painter Edgar Degas called "Before the Race". The painting depicts four jockeys on horseback just before a race. The horse and rider theme was one of Degas's favorites. He returned to this theme time and time again throughout his career. Over the course of his career it is reported that he created 45 oils, 20 pastels, 250 drawings, and 17 sculptures related to horses.

Farmhouse in Provence

Today's puzzle is based on the 1888 painting with the same name. Also known as Entrance Gate to a Farm with Haystacks, Farmhouse in Provence is an oil-on-canvas by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. At the time that Van Gogh made this beautiful painting, he was 35 years old and living in Arles, in southern France. During this period he produced some of his best work, such as fields, farmhouses and people of the Arles and Avignon area. As you might of already noticed, Van Gogh used several pairs of complementary colors in the Farmhouse in Provence, the color contrast bringing an intensity to his work.

Paris Street; Rainy Day

This new puzzle is based on "Paris Street; Rainy Day" a 1877 oil painting by the French artist Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894). The painting shows a number of people walking through the Place de Dublin, then known as the Carrefour de Moscou, at an intersection to the east of the Gare Saint-Lazare in north Paris. The painting was first shown at the Third Impressionist Exhibition of 1877.

Two Sisters

This new puzzle is based on an 1881 oil-on-canvas painting by French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir called the "Two Sisters" or "On the Terrace". The painting depicts a young woman and her younger sister seated outdoors with a small basket containing balls of wool. Renoir worked on the painting on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, a restaurant located on an island in the Seine in Chatou, the western suburb of Paris.

Cliff Walk at Pourville

Today's puzzle is based on a painting by Claude Monet. Cliff Walk at Pourville was painted in February 1882 went Claude Monet went to Normandy to retreat from personal and professional pressures and paint. The landscape painting features two women atop a cliff above the sea.
