The particular species of the hummingbird represented in this painting is the black-eared fairy. It lives in the same area of the Amazon basin where the passionflower grows.

He later abandoned the project but retained his interest in hummingbirds, orchids and jungle landscapes. Cattleya is a genus of orchids that grow from Costa Rica south to Argentina.
