About Snap the Whip: Today's puzzle is based on Winslow Homer's Snap the Whip 1872 oil painting. The painting depicts a group o playing crack(snap) the whip. If you didn't know, crack the whip is a simple outdoor children's game played in small groups, either on grass or ice, usually grass. Homer spent several summers in New York's Hudson Valley, and is said to have been inspired to paint this scene by local boys playing at the Hurley schoolhouse. // Image Credit: Gift of Christian A. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. In this painting we can see two women. On standing behind a partially opened shutter while attempting to hide a smile wit shawl and another younger one leaning on the windowsill, gazing at someone outside.

Today's puzzle is based on John Constable's oil on canvas painting called Wivenhoe Park, Essex. In the painting Constable depicts a beautiful English landscape park (style of "landscape" garden which emerged in England in the early 18th century), the estate of the Rebow family. Constable was commissioned by Major-General Francis Slater-Rebow to paint his country home, Wivenhoe Park, Essex in 1816. Born in Suffolk, John Constable s known principally for revolutionizing the genre of landscape painting.

This new puzzle is based on Jan Brueghel the Elder 1610 oil on panel painting "Wooded Landscape with Travelers". Jan Brueghel the Elder was a Flemish painter and draughtsman. He worked in many genres including history paintings, landscapes and seascapes, hunting pieces, village scenes, allegorical and mythological scenes, battle scenes and more. Wooded Landscape with Travelers depicts a rustic scene in the Flemish countryside. Farmers and their animals are depicted traveling to and from a city in the distance.

This new puzzle is based the 1649 oil on canvas painting "River Landscape with Ferry" by the Dutch landscape painter Salomon van Ruysdael. Salomon was known for his landscapes and river scenes. The one featured in this puzzle depicts a ferry full of people and crossing a river.

Today's puzzle is based on Raphaelle Peale 1822 painting with the same name. Peale's painting depicts a glass container full of strawberries some Chinese export porcelain, a bowl full of nuts, an orange and some dried up grapes. Most of Peale’s still lifes portray food, crockery, and glassware.

Today's new puzzle is base on Thomas Cole's 1830 painting with the same name. The romanticized, autumnal scene depicted in this beautiful panting has two Native American figures at it's center and the impressive Niagara Falls in the background. If you didn't know, Thomas Cole (February 1, 1801 - February 11, 1848) was an Anglo-American painter known for his landscape and history paintings.

Today's puzzle is based on Frank Blackwell Mayer's 1858 oil on paperboard painting called Independence (Squire Jack Porter). The painting depicts Jack Porter, a veteran of the War of 1812. "Squire Jack" was a self-sufficient landholder and businessman and embodied the independent spirit that had become an American ideal in the 1850s.

Today's colorful puzzle is based on H. Lyman Sayen's 1915-1916 oil on canvas painting with the same name.
