The Grand Canal in Venice

Today we're visiting The Grand Canal in Venice in 1740. This fun and challenging puzzle is based on Giovanni Antonio Canal (commonly known as Canaletto, an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice) 1740 oil on canvas painting "The Grand Canal in Venice from Palazzo Flangini to Campo San Marcuola". Canaletto made at least three versions of this view of the Grand Canal. He recorded every detail of every building along the canal, every window, door, and chimney and other architectural details.

Luncheon Still Life

It's time for another art themed puzzle. This new one is called "Luncheon Still Life" and it's based on an oil on canvas painting John F. Francis. Francis was known as a leading painter of luncheon and dessert still lifes. Nearly all of his paintings depict fruits and desserts.

George Washington at the Battle of Princeton

The official portrait of George Washington, that this puzzle is based on, was painted in 1779 Charles Willson Peale to commemorate the victories of the Continental army at Trenton and Princeton, New Jersey. This battle took place during the American Revolutionary War, near Princeton, New Jersey on January 3, 1777. American historians often consider the Battle of Princeton a great victory because of the subsequent loss of control of most of New Jersey by the Crown forces. The Continental Army was led General George Washington.

The Poor Poet

Another art inspired puzzle is here. In this new one we feature "The Poor Poet" - the best known and most popular painting by German painter Carl Spitzweg. The painting was made in 1839 and had three versions. The alleged first version is privately owned and used to be on loan to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. The best known version is now in the Neue Pinakothek, Munich (the one featured in this puzzle). Another version was held in the National Gallery, Berlin. The one featured in this puzzle depicts a poet in his poor attic room. Spitzweg possibly borrowed his title from the drama by August von Kotzebue, The Poor Poet (1812).

Still Life with Flowers and Prickly Pears

Today's puzzle is based on a painting by Auguste Renoir called "Still Life with Flowers and Prickly Pears". The painting depicts a vase with distinctive elephant-head handles full of flowers and some prickly pears on a wooden table. Click start and give it a try!

View of Florence

Today's puzzle is based on "View of Florence", a painting by American artist Thomas Cole. The painting was completed in 1837 and it depicts a panoramic view of the city of Florence, Italy, with the Arno River flowing through the foreground and the city's iconic red-tiled rooftops and the famous Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio in the background. The painting is notable for its highly detailed and realistic depiction of the cityscape, as well as its use of light and color to create a sense of atmosphere and depth. Cole, who is best known for his landscape paintings of the American wilderness, created this painting while on a trip to Europe, where he was inspired by the rich history and culture of Italy.

Flower Garden and Bungalow

This new colorful puzzle is based on Winslow Homer's 1899 painting called "Flower Garden and Bungalow, Bermuda". This watercolor painting was made during Winslow's many winter visits to tropical locations. The painting depicts a bungalow surrounded by a beautiful flower garden in Bermuda.

View of the Brenta, near Dolo

This beautiful and challenging puzzle is based on a painting by the Venetian painter Giambattista Cimaroli. It depicts view of life on the Brenta near the town of Dolo, a short distance from Venice. The Brenta is a river that runs from Trentino to the Adriatic Sea just south of the Venetian lagoon. It runs through Stra, Fiesso d'Artico, Dolo, Mira, Oriago and Malcontenta to Fusina.

Squire Jack Porter

Today's puzzle is based on Frank Blackwell Mayer's 1858 oil on paperboard painting called Independence (Squire Jack Porter). The painting depicts Jack Porter, a veteran of the War of 1812. "Squire Jack" was a self-sufficient landholder and businessman and embodied the independent spirit that had become an American ideal in the 1850s.

In a Roman Osteria

This new puzzle is based on the "In a Roman Osteria" painting by the Danish painter Carl Bloch. This painting was inspired by a similar painting by his teacher, Wilhelm Marstrand (1810-1873); specifically his beautiful "Italian Osteria Scene" from 1848. The painting was commissioned by the merchant Moritz G. Melchior and it was painted in 1866. Moritz is included in the background of the painting. The man in the white shirt looking around at the viewer is Bloch himself.

The Basket of Apples

This new puzzle is based on Paul Cezanne 1893 painting "The Basket of Apples". This painting contains one of Cezanne's signature tilted tables, an impossible rectangle with no right angles. On the table you can see a basket of apples, a bottle of wine, a folded tablecloth and a plate of cookies. The painting is particularly remarkable for its creative composition, which rejected realistic representation in favor of distorting objects to create multiple perspectives.

Hummingbird and Passionflowers

Today's puzzle is based on a painting by Martin Johnson Heade. The American artist was fascinated with hummingbirds and painted them in several of his works. The particular species of the hummingbird represented in this painting is the black-eared fairy. It lives in the same area of the Amazon basin where the passionflower grows.
