Vase with Pink Roses

The painting that this puzzle is based on, "Still Life: Vase with Pink Roses", was made in 1890 by Vincent van Gogh shortly before his release from the Saint-Rémy asylum. This and the similarly-dated Pink Roses reflect the optimism Van Gogh felt at that time about his future. The painting is one of several Van Gogh examples of overabundance in still life, filling the picture plane with the vase and overflowing flowers.

Mussel Fishers at Berneval

Another art themed puzzle is here. This new one is based on Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 1879 painting called "Pêcheuses de moules à Berneval, côte normand" (Mussel-Fishers at Berneval). Renoir painted this idyllic scene of a family gathering mussels during an 1879 visit to the Normandy coast. Marine mussels are abundant in the low and mid intertidal zone in temperate seas globally. People have used mussels as food for thousands of years. There are about 17 edible species of mussels that live in saltwater or freshwater habitats.

The Family Concert

Today's puzzle is based on a painting by Jan Havickszoon Steen (c. 1626 - 679), a Dutch Golden Age painter. Daily life was Jan Steen's main pictorial theme. The painting featured depicts a small party listening to music in a family home. In his painting Steen often used members of his family as models.

A Month's Darning

Today's puzzle is based on Enoch Wood Perry's 1876 painting with the same name. The painting depicts a young woman sitting by a window darning. If you didn't know, darning is a sewing technique for repairing holes or worn areas in fabric or knitting. The painting is called A Month's Daring because, in the original painting (not visible in this puzzle), by her side she has a basket full of clothes and socks that need fixing.

Roses from The Temple of Flora

This puzzle is based on a mezzotint printed in colors by Robert John Thornton featuring a bunch of roses within which two thrushes are nesting, in the background a temple with a statue. If you didn't know, mezzotint is a printmaking process of the intaglio family, technically a drypoint method. This technique can achieve a high level of quality and richness in the print.

Fishing in Spring, the Pont de Clichy

This new art themed puzzle is base on Vincent van Gogh's 1887 oil on canvas painting called Fishing in Spring, the Pont de Clichy (Asnières). The setting of this work is the Seine River at the Pont de Clichy, near Asnières. The Seine has been an integral part of Parisian life for centuries for commerce, travel and entertainment and it has been the subject and location of the paintings that Vincent van Gogh made in 1887. Longing for tranquil settings, van Gogh began to paint beyond the city fortifications and along the banks of the Seine, in Asnières and the island of Grand Jatte. He experimented with a lighter, more colorful palette than used in his early Dutch paintings or Montmartre series.

Mountainous Landscape near Dusseldorf

Put the pieces back together and see how the mountainous landscape near Dusseldorf looked in the 1790s. The image featured in this puzzle is based on an oil on panel painting by Gerard van Nijmegen (a Dutch Old Masters artist). The painting depicts a mountainous landscape with ruins, a small waterfall and ox-wagon going over an old wooden bridge.

This new puzzle is based on Winslow Homer's 1873 painting "Dad's Coming!". The painting depicts a woman and her children waiting for her husband to come back from fishing after a strong storm. The image was most likely inspired by the incident Homer witnessed in the summer of 1873 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, when strong storm claimed nine boats.

Hummingbird and Passionflowers

Today's puzzle is based on a painting by Martin Johnson Heade. The American artist was fascinated with hummingbirds and painted them in several of his works. The particular species of the hummingbird represented in this painting is the black-eared fairy. It lives in the same area of the Amazon basin where the passionflower grows.

Boats at Rest
