Ground Swell Puzzle Details:

About: Based on Edward Hopper's 1939 painting "Ground Swell" today's puzzle echoes the themes of loneliness and escape typical of Hopper's art. The blue sky and the vast wave strike a calm note in the picture; however, the visible disengagement of the figures and their noticeable preoccupation with the buoy call into question this initial sense of serenity.

As well as being a double portrait, the painting contains a still life of several meticulously rendered objects, the meaning of which is the cause of much debate. The most notable and famous of Holbein's symbols in the work, however, is the distorted skull which is placed in the bottom centre of the composition (you can see just the top part on the bottom of the puzzle). The skull, rendered in anamorphic perspective and is meant to be a visual puzzle as the viewer must approach the painting nearly from the side to see it in correct form.
A Rustic Mill Play

A Rustic Mill

A beautiful and challenging puzzle based on Albert Bierstadt's painting of rustic mill. Albert Bierstadt (January 7, 1830 – February 18, 1902) was a German-American painter best known for his lavish, sweeping landscapes of the American West. In obtaining the subject matter for these works, Bierstadt joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion. Though not the first artist to record these sites, Bierstadt was the foremost painter of these scenes for the remainder of the 19th century. Yosemite Valley, Yellowstone Park (c. 1868), Oakland Museum, Oakland, California Staubbach Falls, Near Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, (1865) Storm in the Mountains, (1870). Bierstadt was part of the Hudson River School, not an institution but rather an informal group of like-minded painters. The Hudson River School style involved carefully detailed paintings with romantic, almost glowing lighting, sometimes called luminism. An important interpreter of the western landscape, Bierstadt, along with Thomas Moran, is also grouped with the Rocky Mountain School.
