Before the Race

Are you ready for the race? In this new puzzle we feature a painting by the Impressionist French painter Edgar Degas called "Before the Race". The painting depicts four jockeys on horseback just before a race. The horse and rider theme was one of Degas's favorites. He returned to this theme time and time again throughout his career. Over the course of his career it is reported that he created 45 oils, 20 pastels, 250 drawings, and 17 sculptures related to horses.

The Poor Poet

Another art inspired puzzle is here. In this new one we feature "The Poor Poet" - the best known and most popular painting by German painter Carl Spitzweg. The painting was made in 1839 and had three versions. The alleged first version is privately owned and used to be on loan to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. The best known version is now in the Neue Pinakothek, Munich (the one featured in this puzzle). Another version was held in the National Gallery, Berlin. The one featured in this puzzle depicts a poet in his poor attic room. Spitzweg possibly borrowed his title from the drama by August von Kotzebue, The Poor Poet (1812).

Skiffs

This new puzzle is based on the 1887 oil on canvas painting by Gustave Caillebotte - a French painter who was a member and patron of the Impressionists, although he painted in a more realistic manner than many others in the group. Between 1877 and 1878, Caillebotte made a series of paintings focusing on swimmers, rowers, fishermen, and canoers at his family estate in Yerres. One of these paintings is Skiffs or "Pesissoires sur L'Yerres" (Flat-Bottom Canoes on the Yerres) how it was originally named. The painting was first exhibited at the fourth impressionist exhibition in 1879.

The Garden at Petit Gennevilliers

Today's puzzle is base on an oil on canvas painting by Gustave Caillebotte. Caillebotte was an avid gardener and designed the garden featured in this beautiful painting on his property in Petit Gennevilliers. He painted several scenes of his garden.

Little Girl With Kitten

The Grand Canal in Venice

Today we're visiting The Grand Canal in Venice in 1740. This fun and challenging puzzle is based on Giovanni Antonio Canal (commonly known as Canaletto, an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice) 1740 oil on canvas painting "The Grand Canal in Venice from Palazzo Flangini to Campo San Marcuola". Canaletto made at least three versions of this view of the Grand Canal. He recorded every detail of every building along the canal, every window, door, and chimney and other architectural details.

Flower Garden and Bungalow

This new colorful puzzle is based on Winslow Homer's 1899 painting called "Flower Garden and Bungalow, Bermuda". This watercolor painting was made during Winslow's many winter visits to tropical locations. The painting depicts a bungalow surrounded by a beautiful flower garden in Bermuda.

The Apple Market

Today's puzzle is based on an oil on canvas painting from 1880 by Stanislas Lepine (a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine). In this landscape beautiful painting, Lepine depicts an apple market on the banks of the river Seine in Paris in the late 1800s. Put the pieces back together and see the people buying and selling baskets full of freshly picked apples.

Still Life with Apples and Pitcher

Today's puzzle is based on Camille Pissaro's 1872 impressionist oil on canvas painting "Still Life with Apples and Pitcher". Pissarro was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas. He is the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886.

Jalais Hill

Today's puzzle is based on Camille Pissarro's 1867 painting "Jalais Hill, Pontoise". The painting depicts view of Pontoise, a commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France. This painting is the one that helped establish the Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter's reputation as on of the most original and ingenious painters of the rural French landscape.
