Opening Christmas Presents

Merry Christmas everyone! Have you opened your presents yet? If not, take your time and enjoy this festive tradition with your friends and family but don't forget to finish today's jigsaw puzzle. If you didn't know, the tradition of gift-giving is an old one, but it became associated with Christmas more recently. It is a relic of a pagan custom, namely, the winter solstice which in Europe occurs in December. Around the year 336 AD the date of December 25 appears to have become established as the day of Jesus's birth, and the tradition of gift-giving was reinterpreted and tied to the story of three Magi giving gifts to baby Jesus; together with another story, that of Santa Claus based on the historical figure of Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Greek bishop and gift-giver.

Decorating The Christmas Tree Play

Decorating The Christmas Tree

In the Western Christian tradition, Christmas trees are variously erected on days such as the first day of Advent or even as late as Christmas Eve depending on the country. The tree was traditionally decorated with roses made of colored paper, apples, wafers, tinsel and sweetmeats. It began being illuminated with candles in the 18th century, which were ultimately replaced by Christmas lights. Today, a wide variety of traditional ornaments, such as garlands, baubles, tinsel, and candy canes are used to decorate the tree. Since the early 20th century, it has become common in many cities, towns, and department stores to put up public Christmas trees outdoors. The United States' National Christmas Tree has been lit each year since 1923 on the South Lawn of the White House. So what are you waiting for? Solve today's new puzzle go decorate your tree... if you haven't done so already. Have fun!
Christmas Gnomes Play

Christmas Gnomes

The gnome, nisse (Danish), tomte(Sweedish), tomtenisse, or tonttu (Finnish) is a mythological creature from Nordic folklore today typically associated with the winter solstice and the Christmas season. It is generally described as being no taller than 90 cm, having a long white beard, and wearing a conical or knit cap in red or some other bright color, often with a full beard; dressed in the traditional farmer garb, consisting of a pull-over woolen tunic belted at the waist and knee breeches with stockings. The tomte is accompanied by another mythological creature: the Yule goat (Julbocken). The pair appear on Christmas Eve, knocking on the doors of people's homes, handing out presents. The tomte/nisse is also commonly seen with a pig, another popular Christmas symbol in Scandinavia. In today's new puzzle we feature two cute tree decorations in the shape of these mythological creatures.
Pine Tree Branches With Decorations Play

Pine Tree Branches With Decorations

Christmas is just around the corner so today we're getting into the holiday spirit with a fun new puzzle featuring green pine tree branches decorated with colorful glass baubles. The first decorated trees were adorned with apples, white candy canes and pastries in the shapes of stars, hearts and flowers. Glass baubles were first made in Lauscha, Germany. Tinsel and several types of garland or ribbon are commonly used to decorate a Christmas tree. European tradition prefers the open aspect of naturally grown, unsheared trees, while in North America there is a preference for close-sheared trees with denser foliage, but less space to hang decorations.
Christmas Elf Play

Christmas Elf

if you don't already know, a Christmas elf lives with Santa Claus at the North Pole and acts as his helper. Christmas elves were first introduced in literature by Louisa May Alcott in 1856 (in a completed, but never published a book entitled Christmas Elves) and are often said to make the toys in Santa's workshop and take care of his reindeer. The association of Christmas presents with elves has precedents in the first half of the 19th century with the Tomte in Sweden and Nisse in Denmark, and St Nicholas himself is called an elf in A Visit from St. Nicholas (1823). So what are you waiting for? Start the game and let's get into the holiday spirit with this fun new jigsaw puzzle. Have fun!
