About: For centuries the residence of the kings of Poland and the symbol of Polish statehood, the Wawel Castle is located in central Kraków, Poland. It was built at the behest of King Casimir III the Great and it consists of a number of structures situated around the Italian-styled main courtyard. The castle is one of the largest in Poland and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

The oldest part of the castle, a defence tower, was erected in the latter half of the 13th century and it was used to defend and control the bridge on the Svartan river (the castle lies on an island on the river). The impressive building on the rocky seashore in the top left corner of the puzzle image is Fort Lovrijenac ( or St. Lawrence Fortress). Often called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar",the fortress is located outside the western wall of the city. It stands 37 m above sea level. Lovrijenac has a triangular shape with three terraces. The thickness of the walls facing the outside reach 12 m. On the right side of the image (where you can see a medieval canon) you can also see part of Fort Bokar.

Azay-le-Rideau Castle

Located on an island in the middle of the Indre river in the town of Azay-le-Rideau in the French departement of Indre-et-Loire, this château was built between 1518 and 1527 and is considered one of the foremost examples of early French renaissance architecture. This relatively small château is divided into two sections, the main central body and a wing at right angles to it, and displays a blend of architectural styles. The château's most prominent feature is the grand central staircase, the escalier d'honneur. Its design is thought to have been inspired by the staircase of the Château de Châteaudun, which it resembles. Azay-le-Rideau's staircase rises in straight flights rather than in a spiral, as was more usual at this time, and is the oldest surviving staircase of this kind in France.

Located near Kværndrup, in the south of the island of Funen, Denmark, Egeskov Castle is Europe's best preserved Renaissance water castle (a castle or stately home whose site is entirely surrounded by water-filled moats). The castle structure was erected by Frands Brockenhuus in 1554. The castle consists of two long buildings connected by a thick double wall, allowing defenders to abandon one house and continue fighting from the other. The architecture includes depressed and round-arched windows, round-arched blank arcading within the gables, and a double string course between the high cellar and the ground floor. Surrounding the castle is an old park divided into a number of gardens featuring fountains, a gravel path and topiary figures.

This castle, built in the Gothic Revival style, replaced an earlier 15th-century castle. Work on the current building began in 1743. In 1975 a devastating fire struck Inveraray and for some time the 12th Duke and his family lived in the castle's basement, while restorations requiring a worldwide fundraising drive were carried out. he 13th Duke and his family live in private apartments occupying two floors and set between two of the four crenellated circular towers. Parts of the castle are open to visitors.
