About: One of North-Rhine Westphalia's few privately owned castles, the Anholt moated castle was named after the former city of Anholt, today a district of Isselburg in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its origins lie in a defensive fortification from the 12th century. A museum was opened in 1966 in the castle. Among others, the largest private collection of paintings in North Rhine-Westphalia with numerous works by well-known Dutch masters such as Rembrandt (for example The Bath of Diana with Actaeon and Callisto ), Jan van Goyen and Gerard ter Borch (Portrait of Gesina ter Borch as a shepherdess) the armory and an extensive porcelain collection are can viewed in the museum.

Mespelbrunn Castle is a moated castle on the territory of the town of Mespelbrunn, between Frankfurt and Würzburg, built in a tributary valley of the Elsava valley, within the Spessart forest. The main building of Mespelbrunn Castle is built on an almost square base on the eastern side of a lake. Located near Kværndrup, in the south of the island of Funen, Denmark, Egeskov Castle is Europe's best preserved Renaissance water castle (a castle or stately home whose site is entirely surrounded by water-filled moats). The castle structure was erected by Frands Brockenhuus in 1554. The castle consists of two long buildings connected by a thick double wall, allowing defenders to abandon one house and continue fighting from the other. The architecture includes depressed and round-arched windows, round-arched blank arcading within the gables, and a double string course between the high cellar and the ground floor. Surrounding the castle is an old park divided into a number of gardens featuring fountains, a gravel path and topiary figures.

Often called "Dubrovnik's Gibraltar",the fortress is located outside the western wall of the city. It stands 37 m above sea level. Lovrijenac has a triangular shape with three terraces. The thickness of the walls facing the outside reach 12 m. On the right side of the image (where you can see a medieval canon) you can also see part of Fort Bokar.

The Kraków Barbican is a barbican (a fortified outpost or gateway, such as an outer defence to a city or castle, or any tower situated over a gate or bridge) once connected to the city walls. The Gothic-style barbican, built around 1498, is one of only three such fortified outposts still surviving in Europe. It is a moated cylindrical brick structure with an inner courtyard 24.4 meters in diameter, and seven turrets. The Poles built the barbican fearing an attack by the Ottoman Empire.

The four-winged two storey chateau, with a small courtyard in the center, occupies the whole rock and juts into the fishpond. A stone bridge, built in 1622, links the chateau with the banks of the pond. Its name Červená Lhota meaning "red lhota" can be explained by the color of the chateau's bright-red roof tiles and walls.
