Notre-Dame de Paris is a historic Catholic cathedral on the eastern half of the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, France. Notre-Dame de Paris was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress (arched exterior supports). The building was not originally designed to include the flying buttresses around the choir and nave but after the construction began, the thinner walls (popularized in the Gothic style) grew ever higher and stress fractures began to occur as the walls pushed outward. In response, the cathedral's architects built supports around the outside walls, and later additions continued the pattern. The cathedral was completed in 1345.

The medieval stone tower featured in today's puzzle is located in the Galata/Karaköy quarter of Istanbul, Turkey. The cone-capped cylinder that dominates the skyline is one of the city's most striking landmarks and it offers a panoramic vista of Istanbul's historic peninsula. The Romanesque style tower was built as Christea Turris (Tower of Christ) in 1348 during an expansion of the Genoese colony in Constantinople. The upper section of the tower with the conical cap was slightly modified in several restorations during the Ottoman period when it was used as an observation tower for spotting fires. The nine-story tower is 66.90 m (219.5 ft), and was the city's tallest structure when it was built.
