It lives in a variety of forested and open terrains, but its preferred habitat is tropical and subtropical moist forest, swamps and wooded regions. It's range extends from Southwestern United States and Mexico in North America, across much of Central America, and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina in South America. The word 'jaguar' is thought to derive from the Tupian word yaguara, meaning "beast of prey".

The dromadery is specially adapted to its desert habitat; these adaptations are aimed at conserving water and regulating body temperature. It needs water every 10 to 15 days.
