Toucan Play

Toucan

Today's free jigsaw features a colorful toucan. Toucans are members of the family Ramphastidae of near passerine birds from the Neotropics. The Ramphastidae family is most closely related to the American barbets. They are brightly marked and have large, often colorful bills. Toucans range in size from the Lettered Aracari (Pteroglossus inscriptus), at 130 g (4.6 oz) and 29 cm (11.5 inches), to the Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco), at 680 g (1.5 lb) and 63 cm (29 inches). Their bodies are short (of comparable size to a crow's) and compact. The tail is rounded and varies in length, from half the length to the whole length of the body. The neck is short and thick. The wings are small, as they are forest-dwelling birds who only need to travel short distances, and are often of about the same span as the bill-tip-to-tail-tip measurements of the bird. The legs of a toucan are strong and rather short. Their toes are arranged in pairs with the first and fourth toes turned backward.

Guinea Pig Play

Guinea Pig

A fun new jigsaw featuring a cute guinea pig playing in the grass. The scientific name of the common species is Cavia porcellus, with porcellus being Latin for "little pig". Cavia is New Latin; it is derived from cabiai, the animal's name in the language of the Galibi tribes once native to French Guiana.Cabiai may be an adaptation of the Portuguese cavia (now savia), which is itself derived from the Tupi word sauja, meaning rat. How the animals came to be called "pigs" is not clear. They are built somewhat like pigs, with large heads relative to their bodies, stout necks, and rounded rumps with no tail of any consequence; some of the sounds they emit are very similar to those made by pigs, and they also spend a large amount of time eating. They can survive for long periods in small quarters, like a 'pig pen', and were thus easily transported on ships to Europe.
Two Polar Bears Play

Two Polar Bears

A carnivorous bear native to the Arctic Circle, the polar bear, is a marine mammal (because it spends many months of the year at sea). Its diet primarily consists of ringed and bearded seals. The polar bear's most common hunting method is called still-hunting. The bear may lay in wait for several hours next to a seal breathing hole. When the seal exhales, the bear smells its breath, reaches into the hole with a forepaw, and drags it out onto the ice. The polar bear is an excellent swimmer and often will swim for days.
