How the animals came to be called "pigs" is not clear. Self patterns are made up of just one color which could be white, cream, buff, gold, black, slate, lilac, chocolate, beige or reddish brown. The marked patterns are made up of two or more colors.

Its thick plumage, heavily feathered taloned feet, and colouration render the Snowy Owl well-adapted for life north of the Arctic Circle.
